Conventional Switch Expansion Joint (SEJ)
1. Description :

The SEJ has a pair of tongue rails and stock rails resting on 6 wide sleepers of width 300 mm. The two sleepers in the middle (Sleeper 10 and Sleeper 11 in RDSO RT4165) come with special fastenings and other 4 sleepers come with similar fittings. MS angle tie bracket is used to maintain the sleeper spacing on the 6 wide sleepers. The centre line of sleeper which also coincides with centre line of middle Tee head bolt (total of 3 bolts on middle sleeper). This centre line coincides with the tip of the tongue rail. Then after 20mm the mark for reference line is made. Beyond that mark, after 20 mm, tip of stock rail is kept. This gives an initial gap of 40 mm. The centre to centre spacing of middle two sleepers is 700 mm while the sleepers spacing of others is kept at 650/600 mm based on sleeper density.

2. Issues :

(i) There are two bends given in the stock rail at 168mm gap by thermal treatment. The first bend has shown to fail under loading and frequent breakage of stock rail near the bend was primary issue with the conventional SEJ. To remedy that, a MS steel plate was fixed to the web of the Stock rail on non-gauge side to increase its stiffness. This design was called modified conventional SEJ.

(ii) The head width of tongue rail drops to about 35% and thus we observe high wear and tear in tongue rail.
